Artist: Francesco di Valdambrino
Year: Prima metà XV secolo
Current location: San Giovanni Battista a Farnetella
Original location: San Giovanni Battista a Farnetella
DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
The two polychrome wooden statues depicting the Annunciation in the Church of San Giovanni Battista in Farnetella are exceptionally valuable works from the Sienese school of the first half of the 15th century, attributed to the master Francesco di Valdambrino.
The sculptures depict the Annunciation Angel and the Virgin of the Annunciation and are placed on shelves on either side of the church's triumphal arch.
For centuries, the statues were covered with a rough oil overpainting that obscured the details, and for this reason, they were initially considered of little value.
A fundamental restoration in 1949 removed the extra layer, revealing the beautiful original polychrome.
Subsequent studies have attributed the work to Francesco di Valdambrino or an artist closely associated with him.
A historical document from 1901, the Historical-Statutory Monograph of Farnetella Castle by Adolfo Ferrari, reports that during the 18th century, the statue of the Virgin of the Annunciation was the focus of intense popular devotion.
Miraculous healings and tears were attributed to it.
