Madonna Enthroned with Child, Blessed Giovanni Colombini, and Saints Dominic, Jerome, Augustine, and Francis
Tempera on wood, 320 x 292 cm.
The polyptych was created for the church of San Girolamo and features an iconographic program that pays homage to Blessed Giovanni Colombini, who appears kneeling in prayer at the feet of the Madonna.
Founder of the Jesuati order in 1355, the blessed man was beloved by the Sienese for his dedication to caring for the poor and needy, renouncing a life of ease.
The presence of the spires of Cosmas and Damian among the saints reflects the blessed man's charitable vocation.
Among the other saints venerated by the Jesuits, a prominent role in this work is played by Saint Jerome, whose hermit ideal and attitude to penance were admired, and to whom the scenes of the predella now preserved in the Louvre were dedicated.
