Tempera and gold on panel, 162 x 221 cm.
At the request of Sister Bartolomea di Domenico, abbess of the Abbadia Nuova, Sano di Pietro executed this polyptych for her church, now destroyed. Based on the hypothesis that Sano had seen Luca di Tommè's altarpiece, already present in the church, and that Sister Bartolomea had advised him to refer to it, the two works exhibit notable similarities.
A comparison between the two works reveals a certain dependence, both thematically and stylistically, on the 15th-century work by Sano di Pietro and the older altarpiece by Luca di Tommè.
