DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
The painting, located to the left of the main portal of the church of San Niccolò al Carmine in Siena, emphatically renews one of the most famous mystical visions of Mary Magdalene de' Pazzi.
This nun, one of the most important Carmelite saints, is depicted in this scene being crowned by Jesus with the crown of thorns in the presence of the Virgin.
Tradition reminds us that on May 4, 1585, Mary Magdalene, in one of her moments of meditation and prayer, addressed God: "My Jesus, why can't I be the one to suffer so much, ... why can't I take from your head that prickly crown that afflicts you so much and place it on my head, since you hold it for me and suffer these pains and torments for me?"
The scene described by Montorselli specifically recalls one of the important writings that collect the accounts of her ecstasies, where it is said that Maddalena de' Pazzi, in awe of the apparition of Christ, invoked the presence of the Virgin, Saint Augustine, Saint Catherine of Siena, and Saint Angelo Carmelite, who were her points of reference.sie
