Presentazione di Maria Vergine al Tempio Siena
Artist: Sodoma
Year: Tra 1518 e 1532
Current location: Oratorio di S.Bernardino - Museo Diocesano
Original location: Oratorio di San Bernardino al Prato
DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
Fresco, 295 x 305 cm.
Painted immediately after the artist's stay in Rome, the fresco reflects echoes of the monumental architecture and style of Raphael and Baldassarre Peruzzi.
The figures stand out against a grandiose classical structure. The temple is characterized by imposing columns and arches, seen in a spectacular foreshortening from below.
The young Mary is placed in the center, ascending the steps of the Temple of Jerusalem. Awaiting her at the top is the High Priest.
A dynamic crowd of spectators, women, and girls, gathers on either side and in the foreground. Many of them display the sculptural poses, twists, and affected expressions typical of Sodoma's style.
Particular attention is paid to the flowing draperies and the soft lighting effects, inspired by Leonardo da Vinci's sfumato technique.
