DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
Three out of four heads, from the casket
Oil on canvas, 53 x 36 cm.
The Baptist Sermon
The Baptism of Christ
The Dead Christ Supported by Angels
The attribution to Marco Pino is no longer in dispute:
The Dead Christ Supported by Angels, in Michelangelo's style, echoes a composition already developed in other paintings on the same theme;
The Baptism of Christ is the evolution of a subject treated in two Neapolitan panels;
The Preaching of John the Baptist, for which no directly comparable precedent is known, is also linked to several compositions from the artist's maturity.
The arched shape at the top and the small size are characteristic of the paintings that adorned both sides of each of the heads of caskets used to honor the deceased within the confraternities, according to a particularly frequent and successful typology in Siena.
The canvas support, rare for Marco Pino, who favored wood, may have been used to facilitate the transportation of the works that needed to reach their destination: we know, in fact, that the four canvases were painted by the artist in Naples before being sent to Siena.
Hidden for two centuries in private collections, the works are now in extraordinary condition and preserve the quality of the artist's finest creations.
