The fresco is located inside the Church of San Francesco and originally decorated the chapter house of the adjacent convent, along with other scenes painted by Ambrose and his brother Pietro.
This fresco was removed from its original wall to ensure its preservation.
It depicts the moment when Louis of Anjou publicly renounces the crown of Naples to embrace the Franciscan Rule before the Pope.
The work is famous for the complex perspective structure of the architecture and the careful depiction of the figures of the papal court.
