DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
The work is structured like a mock polyptych and is located inside the Basilica of San Francesco in Siena.
The now detached fresco simulates a wooden polyptych and was created in the third quarter of the 14th century.
In the center sits the Virgin enthroned with the Child Jesus, flanked on either side by Saints Francis of Assisi, John the Baptist, Catherine of Alexandria, and the local figure Blessed Pietro Martinozzi of Siena (also known as Blessed Peter of Siena).
The refined chromatic technique and painted architecture demonstrate Lippo Vanni's full maturity in the great tradition of the Sienese school, strongly influenced during this period by the Lorenzetti brothers and Simone Martini.
