Madonna con Bambino (annerita) Siena
Artist: Andrea di Vanni
Year: 1398
Current location: Basilica e convento di San Francesco
Original location: Basilica e convento di San Francesco
DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
Tempera and gold on panel
The Madonna and Child, painted in tempera and gold on panel and attributed to the Circle of Andrea Vanni, is housed in the fifth chapel of the Basilica of San Francesco in Siena.
The work is historically significant for two reasons:
Their miraculous survival, along with a wooden crucifix, are the only flammable artifacts to have escaped the devastating fire that struck the basilica in 1655.
Due to that blaze, the painted surface of the panel is heavily blackened, a condition that modern restorations have only partially alleviated.
