DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION

The Osservanza Altarpiece is a tempera and gold panel painting dated 1436, housed in the Basilica of the same name in Siena. It is the eponymous work from which the conventional name of the Master of the Osservanza derives, one of the most important and fascinating figures of 15th-century Sienese painting.

This painting is crucial to the history of art because scholars coined the name "Master of the Osservanza" based on this specific altarpiece.

Today, critics tend to identify this anonymous artist with the young Sano di Pietro, or at least with a figure closely linked to the circle of Sassetta.

The panel depicts the Virgin enthroned with the Child Jesus, flanked on the left by Saint Ambrose in bishop's robes and on the right by Saint Jerome in cardinal's robes.

The work combines the late Gothic elegance typical of the Sienese school with the new spatial sensitivity of the early Renaissance.

The Child holds a scroll with the Latin inscription "Ego
