DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
The Madonna and Child with Angels and Saints, also known as the San Bernardino Altarpiece, painted by Domenico Beccafumi in 1537, is one of the masterpieces of Sienese Mannerism, characterized by a dramatic use of light, iridescent colors, and elongated figures.
The Virgin and Child is at the center, surrounded by floating angels and the patron saints of Siena, most notably Saint Bernardino.
The work is still housed in its original historic home, the Oratory of San Bernardino (now part of the Siena Diocesan Museum complex), for which it was commissioned.
