Madonna col Bambino e Santi
Artist: Riccio
Year: 1545 - 1550 circa
Current location: Oratorio della Misericordia
Original location: Oratorio della Misericordia
DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
What suggests the work was created for San Quirico d'Orcia is the depiction of the child alongside Saint John the Baptist at the bottom of the panel, who represents the young Saint Quirico.
Saint Quirico, who hagiographic tradition holds to have died as an infant along with his mother Giulitta during the Christian persecutions, is the saint who gave the town its name and is also depicted in the triptych created by Sano di Pietro for the Collegiate Church, which is dedicated to Saints Quirico and Giulitta.
Riccio structured the scene with circular lines and rhythms, with the Madonna in a perfectly central position, seated on the throne hidden by the abundant draperies. The Child, typically Riccio, hands the spear to Saint Sebastian, while Saint Leonard, wearing a monk's habit, holds the book in one hand and the chains in the other, a symbol of his protection for all those unjustly imprisoned.
Despite the Beccafumian model of the niche, the San Quirico d'Orcia panel should be considered one of the works that introduce the period in which Riccio, now established in Siena, took over from Sodoma in 1542.
