DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION

The Angel of the Annunciation is a famous fresco by Girolamo del Pacchia, located in the Oratory of San Bernardino in Siena.

The work is part of the fresco cycle of Stories of the Virgin that decorates the walls of the historic building, considered one of the greatest masterpieces of the High Renaissance and Sienese Mannerism.

The fresco depicts the Archangel Gabriel bringing the Annunciation to Mary.

It serves as a visual counterpart to the Virgin of the Annunciation, painted by Pacchia on the opposite wall.

The decoration of the oratory was a collaborative effort of exceptional importance. Girolamo del Pacchia worked closely with the two most celebrated masters of the Sienese school of the time: Sodoma and Beccafumi.
